5 Quick Transfer Steps
1. If you have already filled out a FAFSA/CASFA, please make sure to add MSU Denver’s school code: 001360
2. Cancel ALL pending aid at your other school.
3. Remember: Financial aid eligibility is limited depending on what you received at your other school.
4. Have you had your credits evaluated? Your academic standing for loans will be based on the amount of credits you are able to transfer to MSU Denver.
5. Understand your Transfer Monitor Hold:
The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will place a Transfer Monitoring Hold on your account. This hold will expire in 7 days. This is a hold that must be placed on each student’s financial aid account at least 7 days prior to the beginning of a semester. During this time, our institution will upload current information from the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS). It will include up-to-date student loan history and allow us to see if you have received financial aid at any other institution within this academic year. The 7 day hold must be placed on your account even if you did NOT receive financial aid at another institution. The hold will automatically expire after the 7 day period and CANNOT be removed before the 7 day period.
Transfer Step Details
You should complete your CASFA/FAFSA as early as possible each year.
Both applications are available after October 1st of each year for the following academic year. Example: You may submit a 2022-2023 application beginning October 1, 2021.
If you plan to transfer to MSU Denver in the middle of the year (i.e. Spring semester) and you applied for financial aid from your previous school, you should begin the process of applying for aid at MSU Denver no later than mid-November by doing the following:
- Add the MSU Denver School Code (001360) to your existing FAFSA online.
- Submit another CASFA application & be sure to include MSU Denver.
If you are transferring from another school, your financial aid will not transfer with you to MSU Denver. If you received a Federal Pell Grant and are transferring mid-year, you may be able to receive all or part of your remaining grant at MSU Denver.
If you borrowed a Federal Student Loan for the academic year, and are transferring mid-year, you must call your lender and cancel any remaining portion of your loan at your other school. You must also cancel your loan with the school you were attending. Then, you must reapply for a loan for the spring semester at MSU Denver. If you borrowed the maximum annual loan amount during the fall semester at your previous school, you will not be able to borrow a loan for the spring semester at MSU Denver. Your loan is subject to the annual loan limit.
Other factors may influence your ability to borrow and the amount you may borrow:
- If the loan period at your previous school overlaps with your loan period at MSU Denver, it is possible that you will not be eligible to borrow until the next semester.
- When you transfer credits from one school to another, it is possible that not all of your credits will be accepted. This may affect your class level (sophomore or junior status), and you may only be able to borrow the lesser amount of the sophomore level.
- The award process for transfer students is not final until credits from all previously attended schools are evaluated. The number of credits accepted by MSU Denver affects the final loan amount awarded to you. You should expect a 4-6 week wait for your credits to be evaluated after your academic transcripts are received by the Registrar’s Office.
- For Federal Loans (FAFSA): Complete the Entrance Counseling & Master Promissory Note (MPN) online at www.studentaid.gov. You must complete this for MSU Denver even if you have previous loans from another school. While you will get a confirmation email from the Department of Education that you completed these, they can take 7-10 business days for us to receive and those link to your student account which will allow aid to disburse (no sooner than 10 days prior to the start of a semester).
As of the 2012-2013 aid year, the United States Department of Education changed the standards for students who receive financial aid and are admitted to colleges and universities whose admissions requirements include official high school transcripts and/or proof of GED. In lieu of these, MSU Denver accepts transferable college credits. ***There is a difference in the number of credits a student can transfer in for admittance and the number of credits a student can transfer in order to receive financial aid.
- Guaranteed Admissions Requirements:
- Students who have completed at least 24 transferable credit hours.
- Students age 20 and over with a high school diploma or equivalent, regardless of transfer credits completed.
- Reviewed Admission
- All other applicants will be reviewed for admission with an official high school transcript. You will qualify for guaranteed admissions with a 2.0 cumulative high school GPA or higher.

- Financial aid requirement:
- Students who are admitted to MSU Denver and wish to receive financial aid must submit one of the following to the office of Admissions:

- Final Official High school transcript showing graduation date
- GED
- Associate’s degree with 60 (sixty) transferred college credits

Transfer Services works with enrolled and prospective transfer students at MSU Denver. The services offered include preliminary evaluations, resolution of transfer issues and referral to academic and department advising. Note: Students must have copies of their academic transcripts in their possession for preliminary evaluations.
